Say ‘Hello’ to Jean Claude! Jean Claude’s birth on May 2, 2022 kicked off the infant season here at LCF, a season that ended on July 4 following the birth of ring-tailed lemur Dalia’s infant.
Jean Claude is only the fifth collared lemur to be born at LCF in our 26-year history, and is the second infant born to collared lemur Isabelle, following the birth of her son Voltaire in 2021. We are happy to report Isabelle is as fantastic of a mom with Jean Claude as she was with Voltaire! She is highly attentive, protective, and probably a bit too tolerant of her infant’s antics.
At four months old, Jean Claude is almost half the size of Izzy and yet she still allows him to ride her like an oversized fanny pack. As Jean Claude starts to develop more independence however, he is frequently observed racing around his enclosure, bouncing through the branches, and sampling browse options.
Determining the sex of an infant lemur takes a little bit of time, and Jean Claude’s insistence on clinging to Isabelle didn’t make the process easy for our staff! Once we determined this little one was a male, we began looking for names to fit our theme of French names for our collared lemurs. Welcome Jean Claude!
