Alex Porter
Outreach Coordinator & Keeper
Tampa, Florida
Born and raised in Tampa, FL, Alex earned her degree in Zoo Animal Technology at Santa Fe College through their Teaching Zoo Program. In the program, students have to be a keeper in every animal department such as Kitchen, Education, Cats/Hoofstock, Birds, Herpetology and Primates to earn their degree. This is where Alex became passionate about lemurs, after working with the red ruffed lemur troop that resides at SFCTZ.
After college, Alex entered an internship with Monterey Bay Aquarium on their Sea Otter Research and Conservation team. This team rescues stranded Southern Sea Otters and rehabilitates them for release back into the wild. Her first full time position was with The Florida Aquarium with their Animal Ambassador team, working with Ring-tailed lemurs, North American River Otters, African Penguins, birds of prey, parrots and small reptiles. With this team, she regularly gave guest pathway talks, animal interactions, behind the scenes tours and formal media presentations.
She is now LCFs Outreach Coordinator and Lemur Keeper, following her passion for educating the general public about endangered lemurs and what they can do to save the different species.
