Meet common brown lemur Zinfandel

June 5, 2020 by Lemur Conservation Foundation

Say hello to common brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus) Zinfandel. This member of our colony recently celebrated his eighth birthday. Nicknamed Zin, he was born at the Lemur Conservation Foundation on May 14, 2012 to parents Shiraz and Pinot as part of our managed breeding program.

Zin joined three older brothers, Malbec, Muga, and Merlot. The different lemur species at LCF’s reserve are typically given themed names by the husbandry staff. Can you guess our theme for common brown lemurs?

Zin is a very talkative lemur frequently vocalizing at the LCF staff and his brother Muga. Although curious, Zin is also rather skittish and often runs away when presented with new enrichment.

The conservation status for common brown lemurs is Near Threatened, at risk of being Vulnerable to extinction in the near future. In the wild, their primary threats are habitat disturbance from slash-and-burn agriculture, charcoal production, and illegal logging, as well as bushmeat hunting. Natural predators include hawks, boa constrictors, and the fossa (a 7kg carnivorous mammal, related to the mongoose with qualities of a cat).

You can learn more from the Lemur Conservation Foundation about common brown lemurs by clicking here. Information about the other lemur species that are housed at our reserve can be found by clicking here.
