Olivier, more affectionately known as Ollie, is 10 years old and the youngest male collared brown lemur (Eulemur collaris) at LCF. Ollie is easy to identify due to his large cream-colored cheeks.
Ollie was born on LCF’s reserve in March 2010. He lived with his parents, Claire and Antoine, and younger brother, Remy, born in April 2012.
In the fall of 2013, Ollie was introduced to female collared brown lemur Wizard. Following Wizard’s passing in August 2019, Olivier was introduced to his current partner, mongoose lemur Julio. This pair of bachelors are now thick as thieves as they spend their days bouncing between their indoor and outdoor enclosures, watching the neighboring common brown lemurs, and running, jumping, pouncing and wrestling with each other.
Collared brown lemurs are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. The species is suspected to have undergone a population decline of at least 50% over a period of 24 years (three generations), primarily due to continuing decline in area, extent, and quality of habitat caused by charcoal production, slash-and-burn agriculture, and exploitation through unsustainable levels of hunting.
