Description:

We invited Penelope Bodry-Sanders, LCF Founder, to contribute a painting for the 2012 calendar. She is working on a “Lemur Mourning Series”, the first of which, Mongoz with Crinoid and Hair, is featured on the calendar.

The series was inspired by Victorian mourning pieces memorializing the deceased with a lock of his/her hair. So too the paintings remind us of collectors' cabinets that were all the rage in Darwin's time, a time that celebrated the marvels and oddities of the natural world. So many species were discovered during that era, including lemurs, and today lemurs and biodiversity in general face unprecedented risks of extinction, a disastrous consequence reflected in the series.

NOTE: Hair used in these art pieces was opportunistically saved (or collected) during routine annual physicals.

Penelope has explored art in many media throughout her adult life: she was a Broadway actress, a recording artist, a nightclub singer, a published author, a silk painter, and a collagist. Her work was shown in galleries in Soho, NY, CT and most recently, a juried show in Sarasota, FL.

In her retirement, she intensifies her pursuit of artistic expression in service of animals undervalued or loathed, mostly hyenas, lemurs and invertebrates, following the belief noted by Aristotle that in all animals there is something marvelous and beautiful and they deserve to be studied and cherished.
