WHAT:
The Teachers' Institute for Conservation Ecology is a five day
research-based summer institute sponsored and conducted by the
Lemur Conservation Foundation (LCF) in Myakka City, Florida. The
Institute provides high school teachers the necessary scientific
background, inspiration and specialized tools and techniques to
generate learning opportunities consistent with the National
Science Education Standards and their own state standards.
This
working science environment enables teachers to experience the
nature of science through inquiry and to create stimulating
conservation curricula for use with students and teacher
colleagues. The participants will work with leading national
scientists who share their expertise and provide hands-on
activities designed to excite and motivate high school science
students. Using the Reserve's lemur colony and the native
habitat as a resource, participants will also practice living
day-to-day science through a field-training program where they
learn proper fieldwork techniques under the guidance of
professionals.
WHY:
In light of the crisis facing global ecosystems, understanding
healthy habitats is a critical concept to communicate to the
young who will inherit the responsibility for husbanding Earth’s
resources.
The Teachers’ Institute addresses these issues by
offering the Myakka City Lemur Reserve as a living classroom,
but note that the program is not specifically about lemurs. The
Institute will assist teachers in developing students' interest
in the scientific process, fieldwork, conservation ecology and
careers in science.
WHERE:
Lemur Conservation Foundation’s Myakka City Lemur Reserve in
Myakka City, Florida. http://www.lemurreserve.org
– 941-322-8494.
Participants will be housed in the Reserve’s
guesthouses.
WHEN:
July 26th–30th, 2010. The daily schedule is 9:00AM - 4:30PM
including a lunch break.
Plan to arrive in time for welcome cocktails the evening of July
25th.
WHO:
Up to eighteen high school science teachers will
be selected to participate. The Institute is conducted by
professors experienced in teaching creative methods of
communicating science to students. Head Instructor this year
will be Dr. Barbara Spector, from the University of South
Florida’s Department of Secondary Education. Dr. Spector has
more than 25 years experience “teaching teachers” and will
ensure participants are able to gain meaningful take-home
lessons from the course. Guest lecturers and topics include:
community ecologist, Dr. Richard Nisbett (University of South
Florida); wildlife ecologist and conservation biologist, Dr.
Jennifer Shafer (University of Hawaii); native plant expert,
Karen Fraley; Art/Science/Conservation connections, Penelope
Bodry-Sanders (LCF Founder); field research techniques, Monica
Mogilewsky (LCF Director, Research and Operations); research and
information sources, Kate Lippincott (LCF Director,
Administration and Library Services); in-situ community
conservation, Michael Stern (LCF Executive Director).
DETAILS:
There is no fee to apply. There is a $100 registration fee for participants accepted to the program. (Florida teachers will be refunded the registration fee upon completion of the course.) Full scholarships cover all workshops, materials, food, and housing.
