All items from Madagascar were handmade in the studios of Association AKAMASOA, founded by Pere Pedro Opeka. A South American priest, Pere Pedro is committed to helping the poor of Madagascar escape the ills of drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and prostitution. In 1989 he started a village outside Antananarivo (Madagascar’s capital) that offers temporary housing and rehabilitation for people living in extreme poverty. Thus far, over 17,500 people have been served, including 9000 children who are currently being educated through AKAMASOA. Pere Pedro’s village is renowned as a model for urban third world development. The village helps sustain itself through workshops producing traditional handicrafts, construction and agriculture. Buying LCF handicrafts helps support the work of Pere Pedro.
